I gave birth to a 10 pound baby boy in October of last year. I had a C-Section and was gone for five days. We were so worried how she would feel when I brought back the peanut – would she feel neglected or threatened by the baby’s presence? Would she have a difficult time adjusting? She was our first baby and we did not want her to be uncomfortable in any way. I had to say this was one of the things foremost on my mind during my hospital stay. When I walked in the door that day, she was so happy to see me. She grabbed my leg with her paws and cried (which made everyone in the house cry along with her). My husband placed me in the bed and she would not let me go out of her sight. She laid her head on my stomach and her body for support against my body. Later, she heard the baby cry and immediately ran to him – catching my family off guard. She gave him a quick sniff and lick on the foot and then ran back to me. The next few months were hard, the long, long nights and exhaustion that comes with it. She was by my side for every feeding and every burp. She stayed with me as I walked the floor at all hours of the night to get him to sleep. She was my constant companion and support, giving me the much needed strength to tackle those first months with a newborn.  I could not have done it (so sanely) without her!
