Wilbur is disturbingly happy. He’s mostly been an OCD tennis ball dog so I was midly surprised and very happy when he saved me. I was snowshoeing along the river bank in January on a 40-degree day. He had his Kong frisbeee, which was a treat for him because I didn’t normally allow a Kong near a river. Here’s why: Wilbur went to the river bank and promptly dropped his frisbee in the river. Ugh, $10 ready to float away. So I found a long stick with a hook on the end, got on my belly, and just as I was close to snagging it I felt myself slip head first, unable to stop, and I was up to my chest. With my snowshoes on, a muddy bottom, and a three-foot smooth bank. I gave up trying to claw my way up the bank, and for lack of a better solution at the moment, I was able to shed my snowshoes. As I threw my snowshoes up on the bank, I felt more than really saw Wilbur almost sticking his neck out to me as if to say, “Well, come on, just grab it.” So I did. I latched onto his collar and he pulled me out of the river. I was in the river because of him but it was a moot point now. He promptly and humbly looked back down into the river as if to say, “Okay, now get the frisbee and get on with playing.”
