My Lab: Champ VII

Your Name: Ronald M., Pennsylvania

When is your Labˊs birthday? October 18, 2008

What is your Labˊs favorite food?

Taste of Wild, beef jerky, scraps on our dinner plates, and the last lick of our ice cream containers.

What is your Labˊs most mischievous behavior?

Champ will sometimes ransack the trash can if there is something good in there. Once we find evidence of his crime and call his name, he starts this long, slow walk over to us, just knowing he’s been caught. While we interrogate him, he continues to avoid all eye contact. Generally we then proceed to let him off the hook. Seconds later, the same dog loses all remorse and pretends as if it never even happened.

Does your Lab participate in any special activities?

We tried Dock Dogs a couple years ago in which Champ did very well for his first time. In his first try at speed retrieve he earned 5th place against some pretty formidable opponents. We have stopped doing those events since, although he is a natural retriever whenever water is nearby. We also began provided therapy services to residents at a nearby retirement home. We hadn’t been there in a while, but will be getting back into it soon. Everyone loved him there, and I’m sure Champ would be saying the same about them.

Please share a favorite story about your Lab.

Whether it’s ending up on my bed and carelessly sprawling his legs out to ensure I’m not comfortable, or his loyal nature to be near my fiance and I at all times around the house, it’s so hard to pick just one story. But when I think about how he was as a puppy, there are some stories that just take the cake. My fiance and I decided to try out a cage-free household for the day, after finding that our Houdini puppy would generally find a way to escape his fortified and secured den. On this day we decided to leave him alone in the house as got some groceries nearby. When we arrived home, we found Champ sitting on the ledge of our roof looking at us as we were pulling in. Racing out of the car, I ran to the ledge to make sure I could catch him if he fell. Instead, Champ ran back through the bathroom window and greeted me at the door. Upon immediate inspection of the window, it was clear he knocked out the window fan and broke through the screen to gain access to the roof. Turns out, a dog can see much better out there. They don’t call them watch dogs for nothing!
